Danner (US) hails from Asbury Park in New Jersey. Since his first release in 2021 on the mighty Toolroom, he has made a lasting impression with further standout sounds on labels such as Rawthentic, Issues and Night Service Only. After topping the Beatport charts earlier this year with his ‘Such A Feeling’ EP on New York label Jack City, he now kicks off this new label, ISMOS…
Danner - Interview
Hey Danner! How was your summer?
Summer was a mix. I was dealing with a back injury up until about August. Had a torn disc so I was pretty immobile for quite a bit. Once I got back on my feet though we had a blast. Spent a lot of time on the boat and surfing as much as the ocean would allow, training Jiu Jitsui and got to play a few really fun parties.
Tell us about your upcoming single on ISMOS, ‘No Confies’.
‘No Confies’ is a record I had made in the Spring and had kinda been sitting on it. It’s a bit outside of the sound I’ve been making and I wanted to create a record with a latin vibe, but not in a traditional Tech House kind of way. I drew a lot of inspiration from a trip I recently took to Puerto Rico and some of the live music I got to see while I was in Rincon. I’m really stoked how the tune came out and was really humbled with Ismos approached me to put it out.
What would you say are the pros of releasing music on an independent label compared to a major recording company?
I don’t have too much experience with a major label aside from Toolroom and they were great to work with honestly. Big shout out to Pete Griffiths, D, Ramirez, Ben Remember and the whole crew. I do think, with indie labels, you have so much freedom to just do you and get the music out into the world; no worrying about fitting a certain sound or style or have a certain amount of social media followers etc.. If the music is good, just get it out there, ya know?
You began producing music in 2019, what sparked your passion for crafting house records?
I’d always played in bands growing up. I’m a huge Punk Rock guy, still am, but around 2010 or so I went to a festival on an off chance and kinda fell in love with dance music. I think I went on a journey that most do – started with big room and main-stage kind of EDM….discovered Dirtybird records and became obsessed with that sound… Guys like Justin Martin, Christian Martin, E.R.N.E.S.T.O, Wyatt Marshall, etc…..and just kept getting into the more and more stripped back stuff as time went on. I picked up DJ’ing in like 2014 as a hobby and ended up just getting really interested in producing. In 2019 I picked up that Ableton did a Toolroom Course over like two years, and I ended up having my first release come out on Toolroom in 2021. From there the rest is history.
Are there any artists you’ve had on repeat this year?
James Wyler. He is THE guy to watch out for. I’m so amped he and I linked up for our release on Rawthentic. He’s a class guy, super nice and just brilliant with his production. Never misses.
What’s next for you after the release of ‘No Confies’? Any more projects in the works?
I’ve got something like 15 or so demos out on hold at different labels. Some big, some small. So we will see how it all shakes out.. I’m super focused on stacking releases for 25.
It’s been great to chat to you, do you have any upcoming DJ show you can tell us about?
I’ll be in Philly again soon no doubt!
