ALEX PRICE
“I’m a designer based in the UK.
I started my own studio last year after working under a leading interior and furniture designer. I design and make high end furniture using a mixture of materials like clay, metal, furs and glass. I also am keen to re-introduce age old methods like gilding in my work”
THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?
“I would have to say, surrealist, elegant & unique”
WHAT DOES DESIGN MEAN FOR YOU?
“Something which enhances you. Some design does that physically and some emotionally.
For me design should add genuine value to something. In my work I want people to fall in love with my designs and for it to be a part of their life. Something which they could even pass down to others and hold a value”
HOW DOES YOUR WORKSPACE LOOK LIKE?
“My work space is pretty simple. I work from home so have simple desk space which i made where i have a mixture of design books, nice trinkets and tools. Then i have a workspace area which i work on the furniture pieces, It can get pretty messy in there so Im usually quite private about the space”
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU USUALLY LISTEN WHEN YOU WORK?
“It really depends on what i’m working on, if i’m coming up with new ideas or concentrating quite intensively i will listen to something a little more ambient, i’m a big fan of the acousitc artist Fink or the composer Thomas Newman.
If i’m doing something quite active like gilding or work on a pice of furniture i usually go for something more upbeat, i’m a big fan of artists like Tycho, TCTS, Kidnap Kid at the moment. But if i’m working with my business partner we are very partial to some classic rock and cheesy 80’s hits!”
WHAT’S THE BEST PERSONAL ADVICE YOU CAN SHARE WITH US IN ORDER TO BE MORE CREATIVE?
“Travel, whilst most designers come from some great design schools. I really think it’s important as designers we explore and take in as much of the world around us as possible. Talk to as many people and go to as many new places as you can. I can see a huge change in my work from when i graduated to now and i put that down to the people who have inspired me and the places i have been too”
