CYRK

Hardware obsessives CYRK have previously impressed with releases on Live at Robert Johson, Polari Records and Childhood. The duo have fomented a signature sound that blends techno with Italo, drawing on their skills in
the live arena, as well as a deep-rooted chemistry and love for rave music in all its forms. We caught up with CYRK ahead of their ‘Infusion’ EP on Live At Robert Johnson…

CYRK - Interview

CYRK! Thanks for chatting to Minimal Mag. As we near the end of 2024, could you give us some personal highlights from the year?
Hello, thanks for having us. We started the year with an 11-week Asia tour which is the longest we’ve been away from home. We had the chance to hit China and Korea for the first time, playing awesome clubs like Faust, Groundless Factory and Loopy. We also visited Bali for the first time and had a great time with Nico and the Amour in Paradise team. We returned to Vietnam, played Likdo Festival in Phu Quoc where we ended up stayed a full month, visiting Savage Hanoi and Observatory Ho Chi Minh. We started late 2023 at Fomohomon and Tuff club in Singapore which was also a first. We had a few cool releases with our returns to Cormac’s Polari, Folkor Nation and we had our debut with Jen Cardini’s Dischi Autunno with an invitation to to feature a track on Live At Robert Johnson’s 25th Anniversary compilation.

We’d love to know more about yourselves and how CYRK came to be.
We were both making music on our own and decided to try to put a live set together as a duo. We liked the music we made and came up with a label named CYRK which later became our artist name.

Could you give us a deep dive into your upcoming EP, ‘Infusion’?
It is never easy to describe your own music, we tried to make tracks that we enjoy and we hope people will enjoy too. As always, all started with jams on synthesizers. Each track is based on a different machine, for instance Euphoria came up from a jam on the Moog Minitaur, we sequenced the cutoff which gave the direction of the song. Peak A Boo started on the Novation Peak (that’s how far we search for names) and New Millenium was an experiment on the Korg M1 and the EMU X-Treme Lead drum kits.

‘Infusion’ is out next month via Jorkes’ Freeride Millennium. Tell us about your partnership with Jorkes and why you decided to drop the record on their imprint?
We first Met Jorkes and Daniel by liking each other’s work on insta, we then met at Lighthouse Festival where we all played. It was love at first sight with them, getting to know each other more and more, we laughed a lot on how our couples are similar lol. So it was obvious we had to work together and the sooner the better.

What do you think the music industry is lacking at the moment?
Dangerous question lol. Let’s try not to get canceled here. Music? The focus of the industry seems to be more about image, socials etc. than music. Artists have to become content creators first, the music very often takes a second or third role. It seems a lot of events book the same names rather than local talent, and they wonder why they sell less and less tickets… Who wants to see the exact same line-up every month? It is all about quick hype and less about sustainability.

What goals have you set yourselves for next year in and outside of music?
The main goal is to keep going, make more music, play more shows, be fabulous, look fabulous, act fabulous…Try to keep our mental health in this jungle.

Where can we expect to see you playing over Winter and do you have any other news on what lies ahead? We will be back to Mexico early December, back to Asia in Winter 2025, we have a few more releases in the pipeline and hopefully a few festivals/club shows.  Let’s see what the future has to offer…
