M.F.S Observatory - Interview
Hey Mattia, welcome to Minimal Mag! How’s your year going so far?
Thank you for having me on this interview. My year is off to a great start, especially in terms of music. I’ve got several releases planned for the upcoming months of 2024, and I’m particularly excited about my new EP, ‘Z,’ scheduled to drop on February 23rd through my label, Observatory Music
This month, you’re returning with ‘Z’, a brand new EP on your Observatory Music imprint. What can you tell us about this release?
Throughout the entirety of last summer, I poured my energy into the crafting of Z. Comprising five tracks, each one represents a distinct exploration of various techno styles, ranging from hypnotic rhythms to deep, immersive sounds. Embedded within each composition is a seamless blend of electronic elements, carefully woven together to create a cohesive sonic journey. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Detroit techno, this EP pays homage to the genre’s roots while simultaneously pushing boundaries and carving out its own unique sound.
It’s great to hear a fresh EP from you, ’Z’ is full of of potent techno bangers. How have you managed to retain a signature sound whilst switching up your style?
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed ‘Z.’ It was definitely a journey to create, and I think a big part of maintaining my signature sound while exploring new styles comes down to staying true to myself as an artist. Even when trying out different techno vibes, I always make sure to include elements that feel authentic to me. It’s all about finding that balance between staying true to what makes my music mine, while also pushing myself to try new things and grow creatively.
Outside of music, what do you get up to in your spare time?
When I’m not making music, I love cooking, watching movies, going to gigs, and trying out new restaurants. It’s all about enjoying life’s simple pleasures and exploring different experiences outside of the studio!
M.F.S Observatory - Z2
As well as your own imprint, you’ve also dropped tracks on the likes of Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains and Techno Rebels Only. How do you find the experience of working with these labels; do you miss the autonomy of your own label when you sign music elsewhere?
I don’t miss it at all. I love the experience of collaborating with other labels and sharing my music with their audiences. Each label brings its own unique perspective and platform, allowing me to reach new listeners and connect with different communities within the electronic music scene. It’s an exciting opportunity to explore diverse creative avenues and expand my reach as an artist.
You’re originally from Italy but are now based in the UK. What’s your favourite thing about London’s underground dance scene?
My favorite thing about London’s underground dance scene is the sense of community and connection you feel on the dance floor. There’s this incredible energy that fills the room when people come together to share their love for music and dance. Whether you’re grooving to the latest beats in a hidden basement club or getting lost in the sounds of a warehouse party, there’s this undeniable sense of freedom and belonging that just sweeps you away. It’s this raw, unfiltered expression of joy and creativity that keeps me coming back for more.
Tell us about your plans for the rest of the year.
I don’t have anything planned at the moment, but we’re definitely working on lining up some exciting sets for the year ahead. Stay tuned for updates!
